Louise is unmarried, although she does have a boyfriend named Jimmy (Michael Madsen). Instead, she waits until Darryl leaves for work and then writes a note. Thelma is married to a moronic hothead named Darryl (Christopher McDonald), and she is too timid to even tell Darryl that she is going away for the weekend. She phones her friend Thelma (Geena Davis) and makes reference to a vacation they are about to take together where they will retreat to a friend's rural cabin for the weekend. As the film opens, we meet Louise (Susan Sarandon), a waitress in a diner-style restaurant.The synopsis below may give away important plot points. Now, the police, Thelma's boorish husband, and every wandering con man along the way want them to surrender, as the teal, 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible of the determined runaways becomes the swift vessel of perilous but complete emancipation. Suddenly, against the backdrop of a destructive murder charge, and the endless dusty stretches of highway in the Southwest, Mexico becomes the final destination of this ill-fated road trip, one felony at a time. But, unfortunately, in this supposedly quiet weekend of fun and fishing, the dream turns sour at their first stop when a tipsy Thelma comes face-to-face with the appalling side of a forced, parking-lot romance. Eager to get away from their men and their cares, the lifelong friends from Arkansas, the wide-eyed and bullied suburban housewife, Thelma Dickinson, and the abused and emotionally drained waitress, Louise Sawyer, sneak off on a sunny summer morning without saying goodbye.
